Posting this from last year’s Dragon*Con because I’m going back and playing all the DA:O origin stories I hadn’t done yet (my two full playthroughs were Elf Mage and Human Noble Rogue), and although I recognized this Shianni immediately from the Alienage part of the main game (she’s perfect) I didn’t understand the bottle until just now when I played the City Elf origin story (which I did not expect to be so extremely dark, jeeze).

Anyway. This group was awesome.

Here’s the deal: people seem to constantly feel the need to make this argument about playing same sex romances, about identifying as a feminist, about supporting marriage equality. This argument that they back into when challenged, that “supporting [LGBT-relevant cause] doesn’t make you LGBT!!!!” Like that doesn’t covertly lash back into the faces of the people you’re claiming alliance with.

And it’s honestly laughable that you felt that exclamation to be more appropriate than something like “SAME SEX ROMANCES SHOULD BE REPRESENTED IN GAMES BECAUSE QUEER PEOPLE PLAY GAMES AND THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING QUEER SO THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH PLAYING QUEER CHARACTERS.”

The confession is clearly an indictment of a (large) group of people who want that “gay toggle” because they are so desperately afraid that when Anders ninja-mances their character, it will turn them as a player gay. It is clearly an indictment of a (large) group of people who think that hanging around gay people will turn them gay. It is clearly an indictment of a (large) group of people who think that a gay math teacher will turn their children gay.

If you think that “you are insane to be uncomfortable with gay people because you will somehow ‘catch the gay’” isn’t an appropriate message, then I was wrong. You DID understand the confession. You’re just an asshole.

But if you didn’t realize what the confession was actually saying, then that misunderstanding is on you, because it’s pretty damn clear to any reasonably-thinking adult what it means. In which case a simple “oops, I misread that, my bad” is all that’s necessary.

No shit “someone” has a grudge. “Someone” had death threats containing their home address sent to their personal email. “Someone” has strong reason to suspect it was one of your buddies who sent them. “Someone” will never get the money back that they lost from having to uproot themselves and move to a new place so quickly.

Do you want to talk about that instead? It’s pretty clear that you don’t have an actual problem, as there’s no reason for you to be so invested in people being nice to clueless allies (or for you to be on this blog at all if you find the content so unpleasant), and this is just going to be a one-sided conversation about all the reasons why B-mommy is a dangerous mean fandom bully (who has…never spoken to you before?), so let’s at least air all of the “you’re an asshole, no you’re an asshole” grievances while we’re all here and comfortable before the rest of your party arrives.
