It’s actually because Cullen is in a position where he has real power over mages. Fenris can advocate for their containment or cause them harm on an individual level, but Cullen is a templar officer.

This idea that people who view Cullen’s prejudice with a higher degree of concern simply do so because he’s less featured as a character is really bizarre.

Making gay characters straight so your PC can romance them is centering straightness. Making a straight character queer will never have the same impact as the reverse because there are not whole cottage industries making money off straight people’s misery and promising to turn them queer, nor are straight people being killed in the street for being straight. Making queer characters straight is a violent act of erasure.

Making dark characters light skinned always comes out with shit like “they just look better this way”, well why is that? It’s not because we live in a world where the predominant beauty standard is white, blond haired and blue eyed is it? Where the only remotely acceptable brown people are light-skinned and generally have European features, maybe just enough difference to be ~exotic~? Or because white people have some ignorant and fucked up ideas about what it means to be brown? (complete and total ignorance of Afrolatin@s in the case of Steve Cortez or racist shit about Spanish speaking people like James Vega)

And “it’s not your game, why do you care” totally ignores the pain that this causes to fans who are Othered everywhere else in our lives, who just want to have fun in our escapist pretendy fun times.

Because you know what all of this says to me, as a queer person, as a brown person?

“People like you are ugly”

“People like you don’t matter”

and worst of all

“If I had my way, you wouldn’t exist”

That’s why this shit is so offensive. Because it’s hetero white people essentially saying that their idealized escapist fantasies are ones where brown and/or queer people do not exist.

That’s why it fucking affects us.

Let’s hope Bethesda only makes decisions that please Your Highness, then. Buhbye.
